(Solved) - Help w/ Resizing Images For Printing ...
(17 posts)Hi all ....
not too often that i crop and resize images (family photos) for the sake of actual printing so im looking for a clear explanation as to what i should be sizing the images to for printing to say, 4x6 or 5x7 or 8x10, etc.,etc.,etc..
i tried this once before and could clearly see that the images suffered from the resizing (not the cropping).
if i wanted to ultimately print to one of the sizes mentioned above, is there an ideal / certain size or dimension that the image should be resized to or cropped to so that it fits perfectly into that size?
what im thinking is if theres a preset dimension that i could open up a new canvas in > then while in a separate window / canvas, crop or resize the image a little, then copy and paste it into the awaiting canvas and position as needed?
im using paint.net

It is pretty simple in the Printing Preferences. But if the aspect ratio of the pic is not right to start with, you may get a slight cropping effect.
Ooooookaaaaayyy .....
thanks for chiming, but not getting what you mean wolfman (?)

I love Paint.net and use it much but Fastone is better and easier for playing with cropping, resizing, resampling, I think. You might get where you want easier.
Here's the resize window in the Edit menu in Fastone.
What whs means is if you don't scale your crop to the paper it won't fit and part ofit will be chopped off IF you set your printing preference TO FIT. If you uncheck the box to 'fit paper' you will be left with a blank area on your print that you can cut off. It's all trial and error really.
hmmm. ...
i do have fastone but have very little experience with it. the few times that ive used it - its worked great, but i just default to paint.net.

will have a look, thanks.
still just reading around a little. came across the following where the person is asking pretty much the same question i am.

I find it easier and superior for changing file extensions to non-lossy image formats if I know I'm going to do a lot of saving as JPEG is destructive. Playing with the sampling cropping and resizing it's better than Paint.net i find. I use the best parts of both programs. :)
There is another method you can use - and that is via Word. Make a page the size you want to print and import the picture. Then you see what you get and can adjust it accordingly. But when you go to Print, you still have to set the right size in Preferences.
If you use MS paint you can click on the paint icon drop down arrow in the upper left corner and select properties. From there you can change the default units to inches, in the view tab tick on ruler and grid lines if you want, insert your photo then select your size. You can see what it is going to look like without cropping or resizing.
One other thought is if you have a digital camera try the software that came with it.

@StringJunky, okay so i can see why you like Fastone. SarahJames has always said good things about it as well.
played around with it a little and must say, the little that i did, i was happy with the results. : ) managed to crop and resize and print with very good results.

@GX, so i go on to find out that theres software available for the cam but it turns out it was only for the sharing feature of this particular cam, where you can share you pics online / social sites / bla, bla, bla ... which to me is useless cause im not into that BUT ....
i did come across this ....
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/Pag.....estid=2168
see on the right side where it says: ' KODAK EASYSHARE Software '

so i figure okay lets go for it!
then i come across this : http://support.en.kodak.com/ap.....ected/true
' KODAK EASYSHARE Software is no longer available as a download. You can continue using EASYSHARE Software that is already installed on your computer. We regret any inconvenience to you. '

so i installed that 'sharing' garbage on my computer only to find out that what i originally set out to install isnt even available anymore???
on top of that, after some more research (trying to find it available elsewhere) i read in a few places that the software i was after was not really much good anyways. well it was worth the shot, anyway. i just hate installing stuff on my comp. >:S
will keep playing around with fastone in the meantime.
thanks guys!

@Vistual,
This was still on my computer from when my son had Kodak Easyshare.
Don't know if it might help.

If you open a picture in Fastone then push your cursor to the left and look in the top part of the menu there you will see Edit With External Program...you can point that to Paint.net. If you push your cursor to all sides there is a different menu or info.
You'll find those two programs cover all that you need.
Tony
Wouldn't it be much easier to resize directly with FastStone image viewer.
whs
That's what vis' did. What I was on about was something different, namely opening a photo in Fastone and you can open another editor with it so they are linked at the same time to the photo and you can use each as you please.
Hmm, understand. I always resize my pics with FastStone. Never had a problem.
Yes, so do I. I tend to use Fastone most but Paint.net's just a bit more featured when it comes to actually messing with the pixels for artistic purposes.
couldnt have said it better. i have pulled off some pretty cool effects / creative editing w/ paint.net.
i finally finished the resizing and cropping with Fastone and the results when printed were great. no complaints at all.

Tony, i also did as you said and added paint.net as an external program for editing and thought that was a pretty cool feature.
BTW i forgot to give you credit for the suggestion when i originally marked this as solved, but have done so now.

on a side note dont know if you have this installed already but theres a color accent add-on available that i have found to be pretty cool. i only mention this one in particular since i used it so much in this latest little 'project' of mine. the frame holds 14 pics, mostly 4x6 either vertically or horizontally, with two or three of them being 3.5x3.5, but the thing is i used that plug-in to make them all black and white (to give it an 'old' / 'nostalgic' feel) with tiny little splashes / accents of color.
i didn't d'l it by itself it came in a pack available here: http://users.telenet.be/krisva.....fects.html
any other good ones i should know about - please let me know.
